Preparing for College

Find Scholarships Today!  MeritAid.com - $11 Billion in Scholarships

It is never too early and it is never too late to start thinking about college. Nevertheless, early is always better.

What are you and your child doing to prepare for college?

THE EARLY YEARS

Begin college preparation in kindergarten, young students are receptive to thinking about college. Spend the early years exploring study methods, reading and experiencing life, find opportunities that increase curiosity and open the mind to creative and organized thought processes. Foster goal oriented thinking and time management skills in the child, so in the future they will have the tools to keep themselves on task.

Young students are especially successful at learning languages and music, even a child as young as four or five can start taking piano or keyboard lessons. If you have the means to expose them to a second language through travel or tutoring, give it a try, children can pick up second languages much faster than adults.

Of course, it is never too early to open a college savings account.

JUNIOR HIGH

By junior high, students should have a solid understanding of mathematics and be able to compose logical, grammatically correct essays.

Establish a college savings fund or other fund designed specifically for higher education if you haven’t already, this is a good time to start. See your local bank or credit union to find an account that offers the best rate. Parents should discuss investments and deposits to the college fund with the child, it is important that they understand the realities of how much college and living outside the home costs.

Children at this age are capable of visualizing their own future independent of parents, and strive for a decision-making role in their own lives. Recognize and respect uniqueness, support interests and allow them to evaluate opportunities. Of course, teenagers might think they know everything, so before they make a choice, ask them carefully thought out questions to guide them to a logical and informed decision.

HIGH SCHOOL

In high school, curriculum, grade point average and extracurricular activities become important factors in regards to college entrance requirements and scholarship opportunities.

Generally, most colleges desire that the student successfully complete the following basic subjects in high school:

  • 4 years of English
  • 3 years of Math, including Algebra and Geometry
  • 3 years of history and social sciences
  • 2 years of lab sciences
  • 2 years of a foreign language
  • College Guidance Counselor: Students should begin meeting with a guidance counselor at the beginning of 9th grade to ensure that all of the proper course work is taken, maintain a relationship throughout high school. Often the counselor can provide information on college entrance exams and scholarship information.

A Note on Mathematics: Since many students struggle to retain their math skills, it is unwise to skip math in the senior year. Forgetting valuable information before taking placement exams, Advanced Placement Tests, the SAT or ACT could prevent the student from receiving a high score or require them to take a remedial math class in college.

Quite often parents have forgotten their advanced math course work and do not have the skills to help with homework, so investing in a tutor could prove beneficial. Usually a knowledgeable and affordable tutor can be found at a local university or junior college.

One way to keep math skills sharply honed, instead of four years of math, is by taking a year of trigonometry, algebra or calculus based physics. Many bachelor degree programs only require statistics or intermediate college algebra, so even if the student does not make it through calculus in high school, for most programs they will be adequately prepared with intermediate algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

The Essay: Learning to write essays well will help students to succeed in college and most scholarship applications will require an essay of some sort. Even math or microbiology majors write essays, so learning to write a good essay is paramount.

Honor Classes: Colleges not only look at grades, but also the coursework, quite often a B grade in an advanced placement class or an honors class will carry more weight than an A grade in a regular class. So even if the curriculum is more challenging, enroll in honor level class or advanced placement classes whenever possible.

Extracurricular: Colleges look for well-rounded students who contribute to their community. Extracurricular activities whether in sports, student government, art or volunteer work enriches school and life experiences, provides the opportunity to learn teamwork and connects students to the community in which they live.

Sometimes competition to get on high school sports teams excludes students from participating, if this is the case, look for other activities such as karate, dance or intramural teams. Often students as young as 16 years of age can enroll in local university/junior college courses in subjects such as rock-climbing, kayaking or racquetball.

Student government provides leadership skills, colleges look for students that have held a student officer position, participated as a class representative or in campus clubs.

Some students enjoy participating in local theatre productions or taking art classes.

Volunteer opportunities are unlimited, look around in the community and find something of interest. Better yet, if there is an unmet need in the community, create the solution.

Employment: Consider summer employment to assist with college expenses and to learn valuable work skills and responsibility. Colleges especially favor young entrepreneurs.

Mentoring/ Job Shadowing: It is never too early to research real-life employment situations. If a student thinks they want to be an accountant, find a willing accountant in the community that can answer questions about the day-to-day realities of their job and the training required to perform their duties. Quiet often too much time is spent thinking about a dream job without researching the realities. Half way through college or after graduation is too late to start investigating career choices. So before valuable time and money is wasted, evaluate career choices thoroughly.

Letters of Recommendation: In the junior year, after establishing good relationships with teachers and leaders in the community, ask for letters of recommendations to accompany college and employment applications.

    COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS

Most colleges and universities require either SAT or ACT scores and the PSAT qualifies students for the National Merit Scholarship. Contact the selected universities and inquire about which exam they require. However, do not limit the opportunity of attendance at a different university, take both exams, so all options are available. Do not let financial hardship prevent the student from taking these tests, talk to the guidance counselor about a fee waiver. All of the exams can make accommodations for students with documented disabilities.

Scores: Every school has different score and GPA requirements. But usually it is a combination of the two, for example an exceptionally high exam score can give you a little room on your GPA, and vice versa.

PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test: Evalutes skills in critical reading, math problem solving and writing.

  • Registration for this test is not available online, contact the high school counselor for registration information.
  • Study through the first two years of high school and take this exam in the 10th grade.
  • SAT: Tests critical reading, math problem solving and writing skills.

  • Get a SAT Registration Booklet from the guidance counselor at the high school to register by mail, or go the College Board website to register online.
  • Study for this test through the 9th and 10th grade year.
  • Take SAT early in the junior year, so if the score is lower than desired there is plenty of time to retake.
  • ACT: Comprises multiple-choice sections that cover English, mathematics, reading and science. The test also offers a written test that evaluates a short essay.

  • Register by contacting a high school guidance counselor or go the ACT website.
  • Study for this exam through the 9th and 10th grade.
  • Take this exam in the 11th grade, so there is time for a retake if necessary.
  • How to prepare for the college entrance exams:

  • Read good books, magazines and timely news information
  • Take a preparation course
  • Purchase and use preparation software
  • Take practice tests
  • Increase your vocabulary, including roots, prefixes and derivations
  • Overcome test anxiety
  • Take challenging classes during high school years
  • Study and write essays,/li>

Advanced Placement Tests: These tests can earn credit in college level courses and eligibility for an AP Scholar Award. Tests are single subject exams, offered in 35 different subjects, ranging from art history to physics to world history. These tests can be taken any year, but contact the AP coordinator, or call AP Services at 888-225-5427 to find the local AP coordinator and testing schedule.

Financial Aid and Scholarships: Federal Pell grants are available for students who have financial need; qualification is based on parents’ income. To apply for the Pell grant call 1-800-4FED-AID or apply online at www.fasfa.com. Talk to the universities’ financial aid office to inquire about other funds, scholarships, grants and student loans. Tuition can be costly, but do not forget living expenses, which in some cases require more money than tuition and books.

College Application: During the summer before the senior year, finish the final research on college selection and check on their website to find out the freshmen application date. Be sure to find out what other items they require such as, test scores, transcripts, letters of recommendation or other documents such as proof of disability or military status.

    LEAVING HOME

Many kids will leave their parent’s home to attend college. Learning to balance life, schoolwork and employment is a difficult task for many students. So preparing for these issues before leaving home can greatly increase the chances for a smooth transition between high school and living at home to college and living on their own.

Life Skills: Knowing how to write an essay or memorization of the quadratic formula will not help with day-to-day living, helpful skills to learn before leaving home include:

  • Basic cooking
  • Looking for and applying for a job, résumé preparation
  • Looking for and applying for an apartment, roommates
  • Budget and bill paying, filing taxes
  • Bargain shopping
  • Laundry and house cleaning
  • Street Smarts and self defense
  • Auto insurance, basic car maintenance
  • Using public transportation
  • Civic responsibility, local laws, voting and jury duty
  • Health care, patient rights, insurance and public health
  • Relationship and personal boundaries
  • Proper preparation can help guarantee success and a smooth transition to independence. Preparing for college and preparing for adult life should not be left to chance or with hopes that knowledge will come naturally during the high school years. Most of all, it is important to not limit opportunity and choice by bad preparation.

    5 Job Interview Tips

When you have an interview lined up for the job of your dreams, it is a good idea to seek out every job interview tip you can find to make sure that you are as prepared as possible for the interview.

    1. Research the Company

The job interviewer is very likely to ask you why you are interested in the job for which you are interviewing. If you are able to respond in a way that demonstrates an accurate understanding of the company, the researcher will likely be very impressed with you.

The fact that you took the time to learn the organization's mission or that you have a clear understanding of the company's primary product line sends the right message. It lets the interviewer know that you have both initiative and a genuine interest in the job.

    2. Dress the Part

First impressions definitely make a difference in how an interview perceives your suitability for a particular job. If you are dressed inappropriately for a job interview, the interviewer may well subconsciously exclude you from being considered before the job before the questions even start.

Conventional wisdom regarding appropriate dress for job interviews is that you should dress as if you already have the job. It's even better to take it a step further and dress as if you already have a job one step above the one that you are trying to get.

    3. Punctuality Matters

Being on time for a job interview is crucial. One of the biggest challenges for employers is having deal with employee tardiness and absenteeism. By being late to a job interview, regardless of the reason, you are sending a message to the interviewer that you are likely to have issues with punctuality.

You should plan to arrive at the location of your job interview approximately 15 minutes early. By planning ahead and allowing some extra time, you will have enough of a cushion to deal with traffic slowdowns that might occur along the way.

    4. Prepare for Common Interview Questions

There are a number of questions that most job interviewers tend to ask in interviews. Almost every interviewer is going to ask you to describe your greatest strengths and weaknesses. Employers usually ask why you are interested in the particular job for which you are interviewing. You are also likely to be asked to describe your long-term career goals.

By thinking ahead about the best way to answer these types of questions you will be better prepared to give appropriate responses.

    5. Be Ready to Ask Questions of Your Own

At the end of a job interviewer, it is very common for the interviewer to conclude by asking the candidate if he or she has any questions. This is another area where you can distinguish yourself from other applicants by being prepared to ask good questions. You can always ask the interviewer when a decision will be made about the position. You can also ask for permission to follow up with the interviewer about the position. This demonstrates a genuine interest in the job.

What you shouldn't do, particularly in a first interview, is ask questions about the amount of vacation time, holidays, the cost of health insurance, or even pay. Such discussions are more appropriate once a job offer has actually been made. Asking such questions early in the interview process is presumptuous, and sends the wrong message to the interviewer.

How to Prepare For a Job Interview

    Executive Openings!

In today's tough job market it is more important than ever to be prepared for a job interview. You must be able to put your best foot forward and convince the interviewer that you are the right person for the job. To help you achieve this, we are going to provide some outstanding interview tips. Included amongst these tips are interview preparations that if followed will enable you to successfully navigate the job interview process.  The first thing that we will discuss is proper dress. We will then discuss proper conduct and lastly, why you must be prepared.

Appropriate Dress: It is very important that when you go on an interview you are dressed in professional business attire. You should always dress conservatively. No low-cut blouses, short skirts or flip flops. Make sure that your clothing is clean and free of wrinkles. Your shoes need to be polished, your fingernails clean. Overall, you should be well groomed with a neat appearance.

Men should wear a necktie. Their shoes and socks should be dark, preferably blue, grey or black. For women, a business suit is appropriate. Heels should be medium to low. They should avoid open toe shoes or sandals. No flashy jewelry or nail polish for men or women.

Proper Conduct When you first to meet your interviewer, make sure that you make eye contact and shake their hand firmly but don't crush it. Be prepared with a short "speech" or "commercial" which extols your best qualities and be ready to explain how they make you a great fit for the company. Answer questions with more than a yes and no answer. Always provide a brief explanation along with your yes or no. Appear interested in what the interviewer is saying and respond appropriately. Make sure that prepare questions to ask the interviewer. This will show that you have a genuine interest in the job and the company and that you're looking to make sure that the job is a good fit for you. It is important that you spend an adequate amount of time preparing for potential questions and that you rehearse your answers to them. While you want to seem at ease with your answers you don't want them to come across as rehearsed either. Be careful to strike a good balance.

It is okay to ask what the next step in the process is. However, you may not want to discuss financial details in the first interview. Make notes during the interview so that you'll be able to ask follow-up questions and so that you are prepared for any subsequent interviews. Ask for the interviewer's contact information or business card and make sure that you follow up with a thank you note after your interview is over.

Be Prepared:  It is very important that you spend a good amount of time with interview preparations. You want to make sure day you're able to give clear, concise and well thought out answers to your interview questions. If you take note and follow the above interview tips, you will give yourself a great chance of acing your interview and being offered the job.

Get Hired Quick - Top Strategies For a Recession

Join Vault.com and get free career guides

If these don't work nothing will. Here are my time tested and proven strategies for getting hired in the toughest of times. Remember I'm from RI, the little state that could not produce jobs, for the last 45 years. Hey, it is a great place to visit; I just wouldn't want to live there. Oh wait it is too late already. Well, take it from me as a native Rhode Islander if these tips helped me to survive and prosper they will help you too.

    • Work your network:
Somewhere in your MS Outlook Address Book there lies a contact that could help you get an interview because they know somebody with connections. Shouldn't you have your own connections? Are all your contacts aware you need help getting employment?
    • Temporary jobs, Craig's List Gigs (short-term employment) and Contract positions.
These opportunities are everywhere on the internet all you need is a determination to find them. What is stopping you from using a great recruiter while you are looking for work? Many temporary jobs turn into permanent positions if you prove you are worth it. Avoid all bogus work from home jobs where you are required to pay any fee.
    • Don't have a pity party do something about it instead.
One of my favorite quotes is: "A dog in the hunt doesn't have fleas." Keep your focus on something positive and constructive.
    • Get back into fitness and regular exercise. Get those endorphins popping again and feel good.
    • Join LinkedIn & Facebook and lookup all your old friends and colleagues from college and work. One of them may already have or know of, just the opportunity you need.
    • Get a free resume review from a pro. Make all the changes you are advised to. Then start sending out cover letters as if there was no recession at all. Target industries where your skills and abilities could make the biggest immediate impact. Sell yourself into an interview or hire a writer to handle those cover letters. Two good prototypes should be enough. You can then make minor modifications from there. This way you are creating your own job market that has no other competition. You have just increased your odds of being hired by at least 75%.
    • Think Big, think long term and think positive.
"The Magic of Thinking Big" and " The Power of Positive Thinking" are inspirational. Get them on CD and play them in your car while traveling or while dressing in the morning. Program your mind for success. Make sure all your self talk is positive. "Cinderella Man"; "Pay it Forward" and "Rudy" are my favorite uplifting movies.
    • Finally, if you are in a blighted area, or a career path that has been decimated by the Internet or the recession be flexible and adaptable. Either make peace with a longer commute for better opportunity or go ahead and relocate to a more prosperous area. "God helps those who help themselves."

Follow your passion. When your work is a pleasure your success will be ensured. What imaginary obstacles are preventing you from living your dream?

Righteous Resumes delivers real results. Absolutely no typing required from you.

Why It Is Important To Spay Or Neuter Your Pet

    Zootles Magazine for Kids 2-6

Spaying is the surgical sterilization of a female animal by removing her ovaries, oviduct, and uterus. Neutering is the surgical sterilization of a male animal by removing his testicles. Both procedures are affordable and come with minimal risk if done by a certified surgical veterinarian.

There are over 100 million dogs and cats in the United States alone. Thousands upon thousands of these animals are homeless. There are an estimated 8 to 12 million animals that are processed through the over 6 thousand animal shelters nationwide. Most of those animals are euthanized. Over the last several years, many different animal rescue organizations have formed with the main goal of saving as many animal lives as possible.

All animals that are saved from being euthanized by animal rescue groups are spayed or neutered. This helps control the animal population. Some experts believe that approximately 50 thousands puppies and kittens are born each day. In 6 years, one female dog and her offspring can be the source of 67 thousand puppies.

With the invention of advertising on the internet, animal breeding has exploded. The number of animal breeders grows every year. The majority of breeders maintain their kennels and care for their animals to ensure good health for their animals. Unfortunately there are a number of breeders that are simply in it for the money. These breeders basically run unsanitary and unhealthy puppy or kitten factories.

While animal population control is one of the most important reasons to spay or neuter your pet, there are a number of other reasons.

    1. Most pets become less aggressive towards people and other animals. It also lessens the desire for animals to roam once they are spayed or neutered.

    2. Male dogs and cats urine becomes less potent and the tendency to mark their territory (ie pee around the inside of your house) is severely diminished.

    3. Both dogs and cats benefit from reduced health problems related to their reproductive organs. It also accounts for fewer prostate problems and anal glandular problems.

    4. It eliminates the heat cycle from the female, which stops your animal from acting agitated while it attempts to leave the house or yard in search of a mate. Likewise, males will have a reduced urge to roam in search of a mate.

I recommend that you consult with your veterinarian before the surgery to determine a timetable that is safe for your pet. It is generally safe to spay or neuter dogs and cats anytime after 8 weeks of age. There are some benefits to spaying your female animals prior to their first heat cycle, such as reduced chance for mammary cancer.

There is a misconception that animals will become fat or lazy after this type of surgery. While spaying and neutering does in fact have some calming effects on animals that were prone to wandering or marking, it does not cause an animal's normal level of activity to change. A strict balanced diet and regular exercise is the key to a healthy active animal.

The 5 Important Steps to Take When Starting a Book Club

    Booksfree

Reading groups and book clubs are excellent platforms to get together with other like-minded individuals and discuss books that you've all agreed to read. They can be rewarding and also comforting.

If you have thought about starting up your own book club, whether it be an online book club that caters to a wide range of people or a local book club that is primarily just for your community, here are the five most important steps you should take.

    1. Get a Website

Regardless of how far away people are going to be, you want your book club members to have access to information at any given time. It doesn't need to be anything over the top but you should at least have a page where they can e-mail you to sign up, check out the current book selections and review past selections. Other "extras" that you may want to consider for your website include: a chat room, a message board and a guest book for comments.

    2. Write a Press Release

Press releases are the best way to spread the word around about your book club locally. The press release should contain information on the book club, how often you plan to meet with your members, whether it will be held out of people's homes or in external locations and what type of books you plan on your group reading. As for where to send it, you can easily find media contacts by running a search on Google.

    3. Contact Your Local Library

The library is a great resource for people in your community so make sure you reach out to that medium! Post a flyer for your book club if they have a community bulletin and ask about possibly holding your meetings there. Sometimes, if the library does not currently have a book club, they may even suggest recommending it to many of the library patrons as an added service that the library now has!

    4. Contact Your Local Book Stores

As with the library, be sure to post flyers up in your local book stores. This is where your target audience goes to purchase books and they will be keen on contacting you if a book club is something that they wish to participate in! Another tip when contacting book stores: ask if they could provide your book group with a discount for the first three selections. You'd be surprised how many people would say yes!

    5. Get Organized!

Now that you've put yourself out there to accept new members, get organized! Get a binder, fill it with dividers and set yourself up so there is no room for failure! Set up meeting schedules with times and locations and create a book list for your book club members to select from for the first voting period. Decide how often you'll meet, how many books you'll select in advance and all of those other items that your members will have questions about.

6 (as a bonus!). Have Fun!

Managing a book club can be stressful at times but it's rewarding so have fun with it! Plan interactive excursions for your book club members that will hold their interest and make sure to keep in contact with them often, the last thing your members want is a lack of enthusiasm!

    Smartphone Web Browsers

    Join MobileXpression and Win!

Internet-able smartphones have been out on the market for long enough, and offered by enough major device makers, that now might be a good time to assess the state of the web browser in the never-ending smartphone contest. Especially since now is when a whole bunch of exciting announcements have come out by makers of that very software we count on to get online - web browsers.

Any article that claims to summarize the current state of smartphone web browsers must start with Opera Mini, as it is far and away the best web browser the mobile device market has yet produced. Yes, better than Apple's Safari, better than the Blackberry Browser. And certainly better than Windows' troubled IE.

And now Opera has jus announced the beta launch of the next Opera Mini upgrade, Opera Mobile 9.5. Once again the best is getting better, which is as it should be.

Also recently announced was the impending arrival on the smartphone scene of one of the most popular web browsers in the desktop and laptop markets among both Windows and Apple users - Mozilla Firefox. This Linux-based browser has been eagerly-awaited by its devoted fans since smartphones first went online. And now their...our wish is being answered.

A start-up named Skyfire Labs is also planning a smartphone browser launch sometime soon, but what we can expect of it is anybody's guess. The Skyfire browser will be what's called a "thin-client" browser, basically meaning that it runs with limited resources of its own, mostly running with the aid of Mozilla's servers and Firefox desktop browser. Both the Firefox and Skyfire mobile browsers will initially be released, as expected, in beta form.

Personal favorites aside, the statistics cite Apple's Safari/iPhone web browser as the reigning champ among U.S. smartphone users (this according to StatCounter), and number two globally. The number one browser worldwide, interestingly enough, has yet to be mentioned in this piece - that being Nokia's. (And to think, all this time we though they were just the best smartphones for making actual phone calls.)

The big improvement that all smartphone web browsers have either implemented or will be wise to any day now is the integration of the desktop interface with the mobile content delivery format. Now users browsing the web on their handhelds can view a full-screen window of the entire web page (minus scroll-downs of course) just like they would on their desktop or laptop. Then to read a specific portion of the page, they just move a sort of magnifying glass over the section with their cursor and zoom in.

In the past, users could only view web pages reformatted in a messy, clunky single column resembling nothing like the web pages they're familiar with. This made navigation next to impossible, even if one was already familiar with the layout of the web page (as it would appear on a full-sized computer). Thank goodness for progress.

Take Advantage of Cheap Web Hosting without Sacrificing Quality Service

You've probably read the ads promising very cheap web hosting. They promise web page hosting at dirt cheap prices, but are you really getting a bargain at these low hosting prices? Let's find out. Here are some great tips on finding low cost web hosting without sacrificing quality service. Avoid the Freebies Websites that offer free web site hosting usually aren't really free when you consider the benefits you must give up. Most free web site hosting offers give you free space on another company's website, but you are not getting actual domain hosting. You're getting one or a few of your web pages displayed on someone else's domain.

Therefore, you can never fully promote your website or help it to reach its full potential. If the company is shut down tomorrow, your site will shut down as well. Another disadvantage of free web page hosting is you will probably have advertisements on your web pages. At the very least, you'll have an ad for the company that is providing the hosting space. This can cause your visitors to click out of your website before buying your products. Even some cheap web hosting services offer similar services as the free hosts. The only difference is they charge you for poor hosting service! Compare Virtual Host Packages When shopping for cheap web hosting, be sure to compare web site hosting packages - not only prices. Some key features to look for are the amount of web space you're getting for the money. You might not need much web hosting space at the start, but as you expand, the website will grow much larger. So, you'll most likely have to purchase more web hosting space if you don't purchase enough at the start. In comparing low cost web hosting packages, you might be surprised at the differences in amount of web space you get when paying only a dollar or two more. Other things to look for when comparing cheap web hosting packages include customer and technical support availability, multiple email accounts and auto responders, detailed control panel such as cPanel or a similar program, password protected directories, etc. If you need special web design integration with PHP, MySQL and databases, be sure the virtual host offers these features. Also, if you plan to resell hosting to your customers, be sure the virtual host offers reseller hosting as well. Decide on Web Design First Before choosing a cheap web hosting package, decide on how you will design your website. What programming language will you use in your web design? Will you need to integrate a shopping cart and/or customer database? How will you handle your customer emails? All these questions should be considered before choosing a cheap web hosting package. Take some time to find the web site hosting service that will meet your needs, both today and in the future. Keep in mind that you will probably use your web host's services for many years to come. Taking time now to find the best possible cheap web hosting with all the features you need will save you from many headaches in the future.

Applying For A Job - Now And Then

Wanted! Professionals Seeking $80,000 to $500,000+

Dad was an old time mechanic; he could fix just about anything having to do with automotive devices. I recall him saying many times that all he needed to work on a Model T was a pair of pliers and a piece of baling wire.

Both my Mother and Dad have passed on; well I am 83, so that kind of figures. About 1960-65, Shirley and I visited them in Mineral Wells, Texas. I took my video camera with me, even though it was large and bulky. Sure glad I did however, because I interviewed both Mother and Dad and we talked mostly about their earlier days.

When he was in his mid-twenties, he heard that a pipe line company was looking for someone to operate a pipe laying machine. Dad was looking for work at the time, so he told a buddy about what he had heard and they both went to see if they could get a job.

I asked Dad how they got to the job site which was about 45 miles away and he replied "we walked".

At the time I was with an airline and a part of my job was involved with employment. Applicants I was accustomed to see certainly wouldn't have considered making that type effort to apply for a job.

When Dad and friend arrived at the job site, there sat a strange looking machine, one he had never set eyes on. The foreman asked Dad if he could operate it and Dad asked for a few minutes to look it over.

He then told the foreman that he could run the machine and demonstrated that he really could do just that. The foreman wanted to hire him on the spot, but Dad said he wouldn't take the job without his buddy as swamper.

After some talk, the foreman agreed and Dad and his friend worked until the job was completed.

How many people do you know who would walk 45 miles to apply for a job they had just heard about; not knowing whether there was really a job vacancy? If anyone knows one person fitting that description, they know one more than I do.

Buying Used Cars Online - Tips and Tactics

    Vehix.com - Search Used Cars

The advent of the World Wide Web, or more popularly known as the Internet, has opened up opportunities unheard of before for both buyers and sellers. Never has the word global market meant exactly what it was supposed to be as the Internet literally cracked opened the world boundaries of every state on earth and in the process making everyone a potential buyer and seller.

Starting with the ubiquitous text messaging, the Internet is now growing by leaps and bounds were data uploading and downloading is almost a second nature. Buyers using this platform to sell their items are limited only in the most physical sense of marketing the product and even the stated restriction might not apply, with techno-geeks coming out with torrents of application which even enables very accurate 3-dimension rendering possible.

One sector which has yet to embrace wholly the Internet is the auto industry. At least not in a big way, although car makers all around the world are starting to tap into the huge potentials provided by the virtual reality as a marketing tool. Selling a car is a slightly trickier proposition as opposed to, say, selling books and magazine on line to faceless customers armed with only an internet connection and a credit card account.

There are of course portals which pioneers the way forward, hoping to tap into the global auto enthusiasts market as Amazon.com did for literature fan and lovers did. Among others is eBay Motors from the well-know barter trade online expert who started a site enabling users all over the world to post their items to trade - either for cash or other items.

Trying to achieve the same level of success in marketing of automobiles, however, has not been able tom achieved the same level of success with several constraints, the biggest of which the car buyers need to be up close and personal to the car of their choice. This is true even for the latest model. An online portal may just introduce the new model to the public, but there is simply no other substitute for them but to flock the showroom to see the actual car.

The one sector of the automobile which has found its niche in the new marketing tool, however, is the second hand market. Used cars sale techniques are normally the same all over the world, that is, potential buyers would have to search around for a particular model selling at a particular price which is agreeable to them. This is where the Internet\'s vast reach has been able to make a breakthrough.

Used car sellers now have the luxury of posting their used autos online instead of waiting for a potential customer to show up at their sites. The American affinity towards certain legendary models such as the Mustang or the Ford GT40, to name just two of the many superb models that had been produced by the number of car makes in the States, means that there is a market worth tapping.

Car enthusiasts looking for a specific model could simply tap into the vast online network to find the exact dream car, right down to the year of make, the engine displacement, how many miles it had gone through and, with some luck, complete with a picture of how it looks like. Ebay motors, for example, incorporate all these specifics in its portal, enabling potential customers to choose from a list of sellers all throughout the United States.

Of course, there is no telling if the auto on sale is actually what is represented on the computer screen, but once customers find what they are looking for, it is the a matter of proceeding to the showroom to view the actual car. Nothing beats the excitement of seeing a car in the flesh; being able to run our fingers through its flank, trying out its seats and imagining how it would drive even prior to turning the keys where a drive test is given, this would be the point of sale, which came courtesy of the internet.

The list of models available in the market could be quite extensive, from American car makers Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC and Mercury to Japanese makes Honda, Isuzu, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota, or European makes, Volkswagen, BMW, Audi and Mercedes Benz, all of which has been around for quite some time, and offering a vast range of automobiles from vintage to the latest, fuel sipping hybrids.

Preparing Your Young Actor or Actress for Industry Success

    Where Fans Set The Price

Helping your young acting hopeful prepare for a successful acting career can be an incredibly rewarding experience for the parent. All parents like seeing their children being creative, expressing themselves, and, most importantly, having fun.

It should be stated, however, that forcing a child to participate in any pursuit they don’t like is not just counterproductive but harmful to the child. Your role, as the acting hopeful’s parent, is to caringly nurture your children’s’ expressed interests and not force them into a pursuit in order to live vicariously through them. One would have to be born under a rock to have missed some of the more public examples of what can happen when children are forced into an acting career they never wanted.

That being said, there are some very simple pointers you can follow that will have a powerful impact in the immediate sense and create long-term opportunities for the professional acting success of your son or daughter.

    Start Early

Human beings, it would seem, are all natural born actors. Early in their lives, they often spend entire afternoons play-acting imaginary scenarios. Sadly, as many of us get older, we forget how much fun acting can be. By exposing your youngsters, at an early age, to the concept of acting, you are, in effect, introducing them to something at which they are already. Regardless of whether it’s soccer, football, chess, or acting, childhood pursuits should always be fun. By giving your children an early glimpse of acting while they are young and predisposed to the concept, you dramatically increase the odds of their long-term success. Acting Camps provide the perfect vehicle for your children to immerse themselves in the creative fun acting can provide. What they gain from the camp experience has as much to do with you, the parent, as it does the camp itself. With the internet woven into the fabric of our lives, there is simply no excuse for parents not doing due-diligence research on any acting camp they are considering. A little research time, up front, can save you a lot of money, effort, and disappointment later.

After your children have started their first camp, make sure that they are having fun. If not, first try finding a better-suited program and see if that resolves the issue. If not, you may need to consider the fact that acting may not be of interest to them at that point in their lives. If that is the case, and the situation is handled carefully, it may well become one as they get older. Forcing the issue now will virtually guarantee that your child will never enjoy the art. If there isn’t a fit, back off and give them some time. Find out what it was about the camp experience they didn’t like. More importantly, find out what things (even if only a few) they actually did like about the camp. Pay attention to these answers. There is a good chance that, armed with this information, you can research other camps that may be better suited to your child’s tastes and artistic needs. Find a different camp, try again next year, and until then don’t push or make a big deal out of it.

    Be Involved

Acting is a passion and, like flame, it needs fuel in order to burn. A parent’s support and involvement has no equal as that fuel. Acting Camp is about far more than just what happens during the time your child attends. What happens before and after camp is as important as the camp itself. Furthermore, if you have an uninterested attitude towards your children’s pursuits then their attitude will soon follow your own. Help them prepare for the camp experience beforehand. If you have done your research, then you are well-versed in what your children will be learning and doing. Help them feel prepared for it and they will have the kind of fun that only self-confidence brings. After Camp is over, spend a lot of time revisiting what they experienced and learned. Often, there are exercises and drama games that can be fun for the whole family to recreate. Children look to their parents for validation. Be that validation for your young actor or actress and you have armed them well for success.

    Be Selective

Acting Camps are as varied as the children who attend them. Take the time to research, research, research. If your children is new to the art, look for fun-filled camps that focus more on the enjoyment of the experience than the knowledge gained. As your children progress, they will want, as well as need, more challenges for their minds. Complacency destroys drive, and an unchallenged mind can hardly avoid becoming complacent. Acting Camp should always be fun, but as your children grow they will develop a sense of pride in their craft and will be eager to take the challenge to the next level. Do your homework and be prepared to provide that challenge in their next camp.

    Preparing For the Next Step

Eventually your children (and I use that term loosely here) will be ready to move on to acting school. As you have watched and participated with your children in their acting youth, you’ll no doubt have picked up on where their artistic talents and drive really lie. Research schools that have well-respected programs and degrees in those areas. This next step is an expensive one, so doing your research here actually does pay. Just as acting camps have helped form your children’s creative foundations, so acting schools will take it to that next, and this time, professional, level.

Driving In The Green - Golf Cart Tips

When playing golf, it is quite difficult to carry a bag with the different clubs even with the company of a caddy. This is because the bag weighs a lot and of course, be it 18 or 36 holes, is a long walk. It is a good thing that there are golf carts to get from one hole to another which will save the person time and energy especially if one is playing for a lot of money in a golf tournament.

The first golf car was launched in 1962 and since then has made some modifications. The traditional golf car is a battery powered 2- seater that comes with a hood and has a small baggage compartment for the golf bag in the back.

    If one is interested in getting one, here are a few things that a person must know;

    1. Golf cars may not be as expensive as the real car but one still has to shell out some money to get a unit. Since such models are not usually sold in dealer lots like regular cars, one can check golf specialty stores that may have a unit on hand or can check these out online and the various models available, then purchase it and have it delivered in a few days.

Some people prefer to customize the golf car to make it stand out. After telling the dealer what kind of golf car the person wants, it can be made in a few days and delivered for the person to use and have fun with in the green.

    2. Golf lovers don’t have to buy a golf car if that person will not use it often. If the individual just plays during weekends, one can just rent one from the club when one decides to play golf.

    3. Some people feel better owning a golf car. If that person can’t afford a new one, then one should just settle for a used golf car.

    4. Golf cars come in different sizes. Depending on how many people will be playing, one can get a unit that can accommodate more than two people instead of the conventional one, making the person save money on renting an additional unit.

    5. Golf cars can be driven in various road conditions. By selecting the right model depending on the terrain, one will not have a problem while driving on the green.

    Opinion Essay

    Join the Ipsos Survey Panel

The main aim of writing this type of essay is not to let readers know that your opinion in solving a particular problem counts. Your main aim will be let them know of your opinion or your position on either a simple or complex issue and they ought to know that your position is very important to you. In many cases, it is easy to write along and your opinion might be changed at the end of your essay.

You should begin by finding a topic in which you will have to show your opinion. Your topic should not only be interesting to you, but it should equally be interesting to your readers. There are so many topics in which you can give in your opinion. Most of these topics can be gotten over the media. Some topics will dwell on issues such as death penalty, abortion or homosexuality. In other cases, it will be good for you if you cover a topic which have been discussed in any of your class discussions. Keep in mind that before you give in your opinion, your topic should be on something in which there is real debate. The keywords in your topic should not be too vague to lead to you a precise direction.

You should begin the actual writing by doing some first round exploration. The main reason for this is that as soon as you are given a topic in which you will have to give in your opinion, you should do some research around the topic. This is simply to be certain that you have a complete understanding of what the topic is talking about or what is required from you and that it is really a topic in which your opinion will count. With these in mind, you can make a recollection on how the issue under discussion has affected your life or the life of another, you can talk to others and know their opinion about the topic and you can even imagine chances.

You should continue by stating your opinion. The best way to do so is to state your opinion in one sentence. The contents of your opinion should almost look the same like your topic. As your topic was on something very controversial, your opinion should also be one that can generate more debate.

Opinion essay should be concluded by gathering evidence to support your opinion. This should mean anything that gives a backing to your opinion and show that it is sound. These may include facts, figures or illustrations. All your evidence should attend to the logical, emotional and ethical appeals of your readers. Your evidence should be correct, it should be reliable, it should be straight to the point, it should be current, it should not be oversimplified, it should be representative and it should be sufficient enough and strong enough to back your claim and persuade your readers to follow your opinion.

Finding Contractors to Rehab Your Properties

Contractors are your right-hand men in this business. Without them, you’ll never be able to grow your rehabbing business. They are the ones that will be rehabbing your properties and ultimately, making much of what you do as a rehabber possible. Dealing with contractors is my favorite part of the rehabbing business, and that’s primarily because they can be such a great source of entertainment. (Because of them, I now have plenty of funny stories to tell.) Working with contractors requires a fair warning about what you’ll encounter with them, so prepare yourself. Never be surprised by anything that a contractor does. Never assume that they’ll do exactly as you hope. Keep this in mind whether they have worked for you one time or thirty times. And most importantly, remember that you are the one in control – always!

I have not always turned out a finished property that I was proud of. In the beginning, I hired backyard handymen, rather than true contractors, because they were less expensive. I was not savvy enough to know that their work was crappy. They were small-time players who half-fixed everything and relied on super glue and duct tape to get them through their day. They did meet nor even know housing codes. They cut corners whenever they could. I believed them when they told me they had the expertise to fix anything that needed done: plumbing, electrical, furnace, etc. Boy, was I gullible!

These contractors would lie, cheat, and steal in order to make me believe that they were competent. In the beginning I was not experienced enough to know what quality work looked like, I did not realize that I was not selling a quality product. I soon had an epiphany: I was paying these small-time contractors $5 less and getting $1 results! I quit using backyard handymen. I began researching to find people who knew what they were doing and I was willing to pay to have these quality people. It was one of the most important lessons that I have learned. Professionals do a quality job within a reasonable time frame. They are priceless. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a good, professional contractor.

You really need to be certain that home repair work is being done right. I am not suggesting that you learn how to do the work yourself (which may not be the best use of your time) but do become aware of what a job well done looks like. I use inspectors to survey a property before the work is done and after. I also have very specific contractor guidelines to insure the quality of my properties. If the contractor hasn’t followed the guidelines, they haven’t finished their job! You want to be able to turn over the best product available to your customers and you need to hold your contractors responsible for their work.

Finding A Wholesaler That Sells Bulk

Using a wholesaler that sells in bulk can save you lots of money. This is how buying in large quantities can benefit you. You buy one DVD player at the price of $100.00; If you bought 100 DVD players at once, the price would be around $50.00 for each DVD player. People tend to think they have to go overseas, to buy large quantities of goods, and save money. This is the biggest myth out there. There are plenty of manufacturers or manufacturer wholesale distributors around you, probably in your state. Ninety nine percent of the time, it's a big waste of time to buy overseas. By the time 1 pallet is delivered from China to the USA; You have paid so much money for shipping, you could have paid for huge container to be shipped( the containers you can fit 2 cars into). You have to worry about customs also, it can take months for customs to inspect your goods. You will lose hundreds, if not, thousands of dollars doing business across seas.

The price is outrageous to have something, as small as, a pallet load of Sony DVD players, boated across seas. The manufacturers and manufacturer wholesale distributors are doing this job for you. The manufacturers wholesale distributors have thousands of huge containers delivered along side of your measly pallet anyway.

What about getting ripped off? If you buy from China, the same rules and laws don't apply, as they do in the USA. They can easily take your money and never send you the goods.

Here is a little insight: For two years, a friend of mine was doing business with a company in China. They sent everything he ordered every time. He was paying more for shipping, but he was still making about $20.00 or more per unit, by buying it overseas. He was so happy, telling me how much money he was making. Through the 2 year period, he bought a brand new car and a house. I kept reminding him to expand, don't put all your cookies in one basket. He just blew it off and kept doing business as usual. He ordered a bunch of playstation 2's ( I think he ordered about 172 of them). Well, 2 months later, his order never came. He called the company, and asked for the manager, which he new by name from talking on the phone so many times through 2 years. He got the run around. Everyday for 6 months he called them and tried to come to an agreement. They never agreed to anything, they kept saying they sent it, it wasn't their fault what happens after they ship it. He lost a lot of money, it almost put him out of business. He had a great two year relationship with a well known company in China. Who would of ever thought this could happen? Bottom line about buying over seas, you will lose. The money you save is not really worth it in the long run. I am not saying every company in China will rip you off. I am just saying, there is nothing stopping them. You are a measly, little, home business in the USA. You mean nothing to them.

Some more downfalls to buying in bulk is storage space. If you just bought a pallet of DVD players, you need a place to store it. Do you have a warehouse or spare garage space? You may need fire permits or other permits to store large quantities of goods.

Also, what happens if you sell 75 out 100 of the DVD players and the competition decides they will drop the prices. You either, don't sell them , or you have to sell them lower for less profit. You might lose money.

The upside is; if you bought a pallet of anything, you thought things through. You know what will fly off the shelves. You know if you buy a pallet of Playstation 3's or Xbox's you won't lose money. You will make money and you will make it fast by buying bulk quantities. There can be much success, with buying large amounts of goods at one time. If you have a place to store large amounts of anything.. If not, drop shipping may be ideal for you. It's all in knowing, "what's hot" at the time. It's very important to do research on whats selling right now. Tomorrow the same things might not be selling.

Remember, there is tons of business to do, in the USA. We don't need to go overseas.

Scholarships are one of the best means of financial aid available, because, in turn, there are so many scholarships available, and from a wide variety of places. Scholarships are the best option for financial aid because they do not have to be paid back at any time. While they could be considered "free money," that is not entirely true because a student interested in receiving a scholarship, or many scholarships, must work very hard in order to receive them.

In general, scholarships apply to undergraduate students and graduate students who have special qualifications, whether they are academic talents, athletic talents, or artistic talents. There are also scholarships awarded to students who intend to follow a specific field of study, who are members of minority groups, or who live in areas of low-income which qualify for extreme financial need.

A large number of high schools offer scholarships of one kind or another. Sometimes they may amount to no more than a thousand dollars are so, but these are still beneficial, because with a thousand dollar, a student can purchase books for several semesters, or pay for special fees and lab fees directly out of pocket.

There are also a great many scholarship web sites available online. These sites are generally scholarship databases. By signing up, a student can receive tons of information on virtually thousands of available scholarships, ranging from amounts of, say five hundred dollars, to costs which could cover a student's entire tuition bill. Of all of these sites, FastWeb remains one of the most well-known, widely used, and most popular sites. For that matter, a student need only type the word "scholarship" into a search engine, and he or she will have hundreds of thousands of options right at their fingertips.

There are also private scholarships available through individual universities. Universities and the alumni who have graduated from them often offer scholarships, generally with stringent requirements for eligibility. There are even scholarships available solely for students who are left-handed! That is not to say that all college-based and alumni-sponsored scholarships are so strict, however. Most of them can potentially be available to almost any student enrolled in that particular university. In addition, there are a number of colleges and universities which offer scholarships that will pay for the whole of a student's tuition. As well, there are partial tuition scholarship available at even more colleges and universities.

Students with straight 4.0 grade point averages are by no means the only students eligible for scholarships. There are also scholarships available for more "average" students. For instance, a student who has a solid B average may be eligible for a substantial scholarship because he or she happens to excel at football, or theatre, or science.

Before a student applies to any scholarship, however, it is important to check out and research the source of the scholarship. Sadly, there are a lot of scams out there which offer scholarships that seem to good to be true - and usually are. Guidance counselors and college advisors are excellent when it comes to determining the authenticity of a scholarship, which is important because, very often, those students who receive substantial scholarships really and truly need the financial aid in order to help them finance their college educations and go on to become the very best they can possibly be.
